José María Aznar, the former president of the government and president of FAES, has discussed with the also former president Felipe González in an event that, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Constitution, has been organized by the newspaper El País.

Aznar stressed that "the regime of 1978 and the Constitution are the best things that have happened to Spain, which has given us the greatest stage of stability in our history. "I believe in the active validity of the Constitution," he said. In his opinion, "the recognition of the plurality of the Spanish Nation in exchange for loyalty to is a fundamental pillar of the Magna Carta". "But it doesn't contemplate breaking the rules or a coup d'état. That is disloyalty," added Aznar, for whom "our specific problem is called secessionism and it is very serious. In the face of this, the demand for loyalty is fundamental: sovereignty cannot be cut up or questioned.

On the possibility of undertaking an eventual constitutional reform, the former president of the government has stated that "I have no objection to reformist positions, but at this moment any reform proposal has many more risks than advantages". "The only proposals I hear today are absolutely disruptive or senseless," he warned. Faced with this, he said, "the first urgency we have is the restoration of constitutional order, of law, of the rule of law. "A reformist position is impeccably constitutional; breaking the rules is not," he reiterated.
