George H.W. Bush was a long-time politician. I had the opportunity to get to know him very well and to maintain an excellent relationship. I have a fond memory of our conversations and our meetings. His commitment to freedom and democracy around the world was exemplary. He was a great president at historically critical moments such as the demise of the Soviet Union, as well as the fall of the wall and communism as a threat to freedoms. His support for German unification, for the unity of Europe and his ambition to create a fairer and freer international order marks a historical legacy worthy of recognition.
I have conveyed my condolences to George W. Bush, to Jeb Bush and to the entire family of the former president, whom I was able to accompany during the farewell to George H.W. Bush at the US Capitol.
